Davy ``Tentacle`` Jones, Captain of the Black Cuttlefish
$10.00
In taverns along every shore, bards sing tales of Captain Davy Jones. Some say he was born in the darkest depths of the ocean from a mollusk shell, brought to life by a giant shark and a whale, or even emerged from spilled blood. Few dare interrupt a bard’s wild imagination to ask for details.
The truth, however, is both simpler and more complex, as is often the case with such beings. Captain Davy Jones was once a man—or a goblin, or even an orc. It’s hard to say, as few survived meeting him. Regardless, he was a pirate whose name was cursed by the greatest kings, the terror of the richest merchant houses, and the nightmare of all captains who sailed ships larger than a fishing boat.
Davy Jones looted ships with the ease and ruthlessness of a child playing with leaf boats in a stream. He chased down ships, sank them, and shattered them to pieces, ignoring all resistance. In his cabin, he proudly displayed posters from kings, dukes, admirals, and merchants promising rewards for his head. He laughed at the priests—after his third bottle of rum, their sermons on mercy and warnings about the gods’ wrath sounded like nothing more than the buzz of annoying mosquitoes.
He despised the gods so much that he could be called the first atheist of Signum. Among the few, the gods kept a watchful eye to ensure that non-believers didn’t linger in the world of the living for too long. More than songs of fearless pirates, people love to hear about their terrible fates. And Davy Jones, the superstar of his time, couldn’t escape this destiny. When his luck vanished like the morning mist and his ship sank, he did not beg for mercy. No, the captain cursed the gods and everything that existed until his last breath.
And here’s the paradox: thousands of monks pray for years, and hundreds of hermits journey into the mountains and deserts in search of revelation. They do everything to one day hear the voice of a god. Yet the gods speak to those who never wanted to know them. While the gods worth mentioning raised their glasses to celebrate that this troublemaker and blasphemer, Davy Jones, would no longer offend the world with his presence, one god was interested in the dying pirate. The Great Forgotten God reached out his long and repulsive tentacles toward him.
“I accept your spilled blood as a worthy sacrifice,” he proclaimed as if the captain was his loyal follower and as if there was sacred meaning in his murders. “You have always seen the ugly side of this world. False gods, with their weakness and so-called ‘love,’ have poisoned it. Become my weapon and continue hunting the servants of false gods! Prepare the world for my return!”
The blessing of the Forgotten God restored the broken pirate ship, now known as the “Black Cuttlefish.” The transformed captain once again took his place on the bridge. Tentacles grew in place of his beard, and seawater flowed through his veins instead of blood. But his heart remained stony, and his greed, insatiable. The only thing that changed was that the captain found a god to whom he was willing to offer sacrifices.
Not because he felt grateful for the salvation. Davy Jones appreciated how elegantly the Forgotten God insulted all other gods by performing this miracle.
